History:

Shiva graced his Dharshan to Lord Vishnu here on a full moon Sunday.

King Dharmabaala Chola was affected by leprosy due to previous Jenma Karma. At that time he was ruling Kamalapuri. To get relieved from his disease he was advised to go to Vilvanallur which was full of Vilva trees. He came her and worshipped Kamaeswarar and got relieved from the disease. He created this village and named it Vivanallur and built the temple for Kameeswarar. We find this story in the Villai Puranam written by Veeraraga Kavi. The Villaipuranam has 495 verses about this temple.

Brahma and Vishnu had a dispute that who was superior than the other. Brahma said to go in search of Shiva's head as a swan and Vishnu in search of Shiva's feet in the form of a Boar. Vishnu admitted that he could not find the feet of Shiva but Brahma lied. So, Brahma was cursed. He repented and seeked for forgiveness. Lord Shiva advised Brahma to grow Vilva trees in the banks of River Mutharu and perform penance there. The place suggested by Shiva is Villiyanur today. Brahma came her, created a pond by his name and worshipped Shiva and got relieved from the curse.

A cow belonging to Uzavarkarai Pannaiyar showered milk in a bush. The villagers told about this to the King. The King came to this place and found a Shiva Linga in the place where the cow showered milk. He built a big temple for the deity. This is a Purana Story.
